Calla Lily
Zantedeschia aethiopica: Calla Lilies are native to South Africa. Large white flowers up to 10 inches long surrounded by a creamy yellow fingerlike center. They bloom from late spring to mid-summer. The upright, arrow-shaped leaves are solid green and glossy. Hardy in zones 7-11, otherwise dig up and store for the winter.
Seed-grown calla lilies can flourish as garden or container plants.

Calla lilies (Zantedeschia spp.) feature broad emerald green leaves and tall flower spathes with white blooms. They flower in early and midsummer, setting seed in late summer and early fall. Calla lilies grow in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 8 through 10. Although callas are often grown from sections of their root rhizomes, you can also plant them from seed. The seeds require a three-month dormancy period, so it’s best to sow fall-collected seeds in spring to ensure best germination rates.

Fill 3-inch seedling pots with a standard potting mixture and set the pots in a drip tray. Sow the calla lily seeds on the soil surface and press them into the soil so the top of the seed is just barely exposed.
3
Pour one inch of water into the drip tray and allow the soil to soak up the water through the bottom drainage holes in the pots. Pour out the excess water when the soil surface feels moist, which can take up to an hour.
4
Cover the pot with a clear plastic bag to retain the moisture in the soil and air as the seed germinates. Set the pot in a 70 to 75 degree Fahrenheit location where it receives bright, indirect light. Calla lily seeds require light to germinate.
5
Monitor the soil moisture and water lightly if the soil begins to dry before germination. Remove the bag once the seeds sprout, which can take between one and three months.
6
Move the pot to a location that receives six to eight hours of direct sunlight after the seeds sprout. Water the calla lily seedlings when the soil surface dries.
7
Transplant the plant into a 6-inch pot after the seedling produces its second set of true leaves. Plant it at the same depth it was growing at previously. Choose an acidic potting mix, such as one formulated for azaleas.
